Impact is the change in outcomes — e.g. lives saved or income earned — caused by a social program. Impact analysis shows that there can be massive differences in the effectiveness of different programs run by nonprofits. Today, these differences are hidden from donors. Our ratings identify those differences and present them to donors in an easy-to-use format, enabling data-driven decisions.

Our ratings are based on rigorous social science principles and answer the donor’s principal question: How will my dollars make someone’s life better? To do so, we:
We estimate the changes in outcomes, such as lives saved or income earned, that are attributed to a nonprofit’s work.
We focus on what matters: impact. We do not care how costs are split into accounting categories unless there are signs of fraud.
We divide outcome changes attributable to the nonprofit by costs and compare to benchmarks to rate cost-effectiveness.
Head and heart. We love that donors choose causes with their heart. Within a cause, we want to help people choose nonprofits with their head.
Nonprofits make lives better every day. We aim to help nonprofits tell their impact story to donors, enabling them to do more good.
Our ratings are not perfect and we strive to improve them every day. We welcome your thoughts, suggestions and corrections here.
We aim to improve how donors give and nonprofits report impact. We will be routinely publishing data showing our progress.
