Impact Report on Upaya Social Ventures

Program activities
Upaya's mission is to create dignified jobs for the poorest of the poor by building scalable businesses with investment and consulting support. We select high-potential entrepreneurs and provide them with seed funding and hands-on technical support.

$200 increases income for an ultra-poor, previously unemployed or underemployed woman or man by $800.

Upaya Social Ventures collected data on outcomes of participants before and after the program. To estimate the change attributable to the program, Upaya Social Ventures made an educated guess as to how participants would have fared without the program.

Data source
When Upaya invests in a new company, it administers baseline surveys to a sample of incoming jobholders to assess poverty, current income, and assets. Upaya then revisits jobholders 2 or more years later and assesses changes in these indicators.

Attribution method
The average annual growth in daily wage among informal sector workers in India is about 8 INR, based on 2004–2012 International Labour Organization statistics. Upaya assumes jobholders would have experienced that amount of growth without its program.

This report was created by Upaya Social Ventures with self-reported data using ImpactMatters' impact reporting platform. This report covers November 2015 to November 2018.
